Arthrosis and Tobacco: AFRONTAR, the smoking cessation process
OAFI’s new survey, AFRONTAR, the smoking cessation process.
Smoking is seriously detrimental to health, and there is no doubt about it. It has been shown to be related to various diseases, such as cancer, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive and urinary system problems, among others. In fact, tobacco kills half of its consumers, as stated by the World Health Organization (OMS). In any case, it is also clear that quality of life is affected, interfering with reproduction and osteoarticular health, for example.
Osteoarticular pathology is particularly frequent; it is observed that smokers are between 30% and 50% more likely to fracture their hips than non-smokers of the same age; and as for chronic pain, there is a significant increase in the intensity of pain among smokers.
However, despite awareness of the risks, there are numerous barriers to quitting smoking, which makes smoking cessation a huge challenge and only sometimes successful.
“AFRONTAR, the smoking cessation process”
In OAFI we understand that prevention of access to tobacco is crucial, but we also consider it essential to provide effective support to those who wish to quit smoking but are unable to do so on their own; and in this sense, we have promoted the project “Facing the process of quitting smoking”, with the main objective of improving the coping and self-care capacity of the patient with osteoarticular pathology to quit smoking. We also intend to identify the main motivations, barriers, assess the effectiveness of coping strategies and make proposals that could contribute to the success of smoking cessation.
From OAFI, we promote this study having had the favorable opinion of the regional Research Ethics Committee (CEI) of the Community of Madrid; and scientific endorsement of the Spanish Society for Quality of Care (SECA); the Federation of Family and Community Nursing Associations (FAECAP) and the Sociedad Científico Profesional de Farmacia Iberoamericana Comunitaria (Ibero-American Community Pharmacy Society) (SOCFIC), we organized the present project, which is being carried out in 2 stages.
The two stages:
1ST STAGE:
The aim of this study was to identify the main physical, emotional, social and occupational barriers to quitting smoking:
Physical: nicotine addiction.
Emotional: because it satisfies.
Social: because of its easy access.
Labor: because of smoking colleagues.
At the end of this stage, it has been published in different congresses and media:
As a specific congress, at the 6th International Congress – 51st Jornadas Nacionales SOCIODROGOALCOHOL, on September 26-28, 2014.
Review article in a management journal, New Medical Economics, in issue 194, dated June 15, 2024.
2ND STAGE:
The current study was launched to assess the effectiveness of the eight coping strategies against the above barriers:
Proactivity, to put measures oneself to solve the problem;
Self-criticism with oneself, to improve
Emotional manifestation to let off steam.
Desiderative thinking looking for the intended good side.
Social support with a trusted person.
Cognitive restructuring to try to see the positive side of things.
Avoidance of problems so as not to let them affect you.
Social withdrawal, hiding.
