OAFI is the Osteoarthritis Foundation International, the first and only Foundation exclusively devoted to people with osteoarthritis worldwide.
The Foundation was created in Barcelona in October 2016 with the aim of leading the fight against osteoarthritis by promoting education, prevention, treatment and research into everything related to joint health and offering solutions to people suffering from this pathology so that they can feel supported, alleviate their pain and improve their quality of life.
Osteoarthritis is a little-recognised disease but it affects more than 300 million people worldwide. Despite its social impact, it is seen as a distant pathology, associated with old age. However, as well as affecting older people, it is increasingly being detected in women from the age of 50, athletes and even young people.
Osteoarthritis directly affects people’s mobility and autonomy, with the psychological toll that this entails. It is also associated with other comorbidity problems such as hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, among others.
In a society where the life expectancy of the population is getting longer and longer, this type of illness should be considered a major concern. It is for this reason that at the OAFI Foundation we work to put the patient at the centre of the disease and help them to have a voice and be heard. All our actions are designed for the benefit of the patient and the prevention of osteoarthritis in people with risk factors for developing it.
The Foundation has developed educational programmes to improve and prevent this pathology for all segments of the population susceptible to osteoarthritis: OAFI WOMAN, OAFI SPORT, OAFI SPORT CHILDREN, OAFI SPORT VETERANS, OAFI WELLNESS CORPORATION, EXPERT PATIENT, among others. It is also leading international research projects to improve the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis.
There are many people who suffer pain in silence, feeling alone and unprotected. We decided to create the OAFI Foundation where the patient is the centre of everything. We propose a change in the mentality of the osteoarthritis patient, a positive attitude and an active lifestyle.
With the OAFI Foundation, the patient is no longer alone!
